Organizing in Small Spaces: Daily Kitchen Routine

by Katie on February 1, 2013

In order to keep our kitchen manageable, I follow a very basic routine that I implement each day.  For starters, I make a concerted effort to complete the following tasks after each meal:

  • rinse all dishes
  • load/unload the dishwasher
  • wipe down the table and counters

In addition to these tasks, I have an evening routine that I have put into place to keep our kitchen tidy.  Even if I have a crazy evening, I have found that it’s well worth my time and effort to complete this list:

  • rinse all dishes
  • hand wash dishes that are not dishwasher safe
  • load/unload the dishwasher
  • scrub our the kitchen sink
  • wipe down the table and counters
  • vacuum the floor
  • put out a new dish cloth and dish towel
  • empty trash

There is something very calming about waking up in the morning to a perfectly clean kitchen, and I find that I’m so much farther ahead of schedule the next day just by keeping up with this routine.  Next week, I’ll be tackling the job of organizing the kids’ bedrooms.  And trust me, with four kids in two rooms, it’s no small job!
