I guess it comes as no surprise that I have a special fondness for coupons!  Not only do I save by using coupons at the grocery store, but I also consistently search out coupons for retail stores as well as for activities and events for our family.

The KidStuff Coupon Savings Book is crammed full of coupon savings for retail store purchases, online offers, family activities, and restaurant bargains.  Not only can the KidStuff Book save your family money, but it helps to support local schools at the same time!

good-cheap

Each week, I visit the local library with our two youngest children.  While they peruse the kids’ section of books and movies, I love taking a few minutes to skim through the library’s selection of cookbooks in search of new recipes.  My favorite recipes are those that are not only healthy and delicious, but are budget-friendly as well.

Good and Cheap: Eat Well on $4/Day is a cookbook that embraces all of those factors.  Leanne Brown, the author of the book, set out on a mission to help families eat healthy, nutritious meals that are also affordable.  Knowing that many families in the United States struggle to put food on the table for their families, Leanne created a cookbook that is filled with recipes that are very budget-conscious, but at the same time, are filled with delicious flavor.

The book is broken down into several categories such as breakfast, soup and salad, snacks, dinner, big batches, pantry, drinks, and desserts.  In addition to the recipes, Leanne offers some very practical suggestions for families as well.

For instance, she outlines more than a dozen tips for planning ahead and for grocery shopping in order to help families stretch their budget while creating delicious meals.  She also has a section that helps families repurpose leftovers into a variety of innovative meals as well as foods that are best to keep on hand for basic recipes.

Good and Cheap is definitely not your average cookbook.  Tucked into its pages, you’ll find such recipes as chocolate zucchini muffins, butternut squash soup, Mexican street corn, mashed celery root, pulled pork, lemon hummus, caramelized bananas, and many more.

My favorite part of Good and Cheap is the author’s dedication to those in need.  For every book that is purchased, a book is donated to someone who needs it.  Plus, for those families who cannot afford the book but are still searching for healthy meals on a budget, the recipes are available online as a free download – how awesome is that?!

So, I hope I’ve whet your appetite, because Leanne Brown would like to give one of my readers a free copy of Good and Cheap: Eat Well on $4/Day!  You have 5 ways to enter this giveaway:

  1. Leave a comment on this post – which meal is hardest for your family to find creative solutions for?

COSI: Family 4-Pack of Tickets Giveaway

by Katie on October 20, 2015

I’m very happy to say that the issue with the comments on Cincinnati Cents has officially been fixed!  So, I’m reopening the COSI Giveaway to allow everyone who would like to enter to do so.  Good luck to all!

If you’re a long-time reader, it probably comes as no surprise that I love living in Cincinnati.  Aside from the obvious….Skyline, Graeter’s, and LaRosa’s….there are so many family-friendly events and attractions right in our own city.  And with such a close proximity to major cities such as Columbus, Indianapolis, and Louisville, there are endless option for day trips and weekend excursions.

Last week, our family took advantage of living within driving distance to Columbus and spent the day at COSI – Center of Science and Industry.  Encompassing a complex that is 320,000 square feet in area, COSI is the epitome of hands-on learning and fun.  COSI features four strategic areas of focus – energy and environment, technology and innovation, health and medicine, and early childhood education.

COSI embraces a childlike love of learning.  Through hands-on exhibits, interactive demonstrations, and immersive experiences, COSI provides an educational experience and a meaningful understanding of science, health, industry, and history for all of its visitors….young or old!

Our visit to COSI started at the Planetarium where we watched the Wildest Weather in the Solar System.  The Planetarium at COSI is the largest in Ohio and it features a 60-foot dome with their Digistar 5-projection system.  We had a phenomenal view of the solar system during the show which the kids loved, especially since it was their first visit to a planetarium.  The Planetarium is currently featuring two additional shows – Our Universe Above and One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure.  All three of these shows run through September 7th.

After the Planetarium, we went to Adventure! in the Valley of the Unknown.  This self-contained mysterious world completely transports visitors to a remote island where the remnants of an ancient culture leave a cryptic trail of messages.  The kids spent over an hour in the Adventure! exhibit, working their way through mysterious clues, symbols, and messages to uncover the first set of answers to this ancient world.

Working off these initial clues, they collaborated together to decipher the ancient alphabet.  Once they decoded the alphabet, and explored a few more caverns, they decided to solve the remaining mysteries and messages on our next visit to COSI so they could explore the rest of the attractions.

After working through Adventure! , we stopped by COSI’s seasonal exhibit, Top Secret: License to Spy.  In this exhibit, participants can use their secret agent skills to investigate suspects in the mystery of who stole the super computer chip.  There are a variety of activities within the exhibit that help investigators gain intelligence on the suspects and dive deeper into the spy realm.  Our 12-year old was completely enthralled with this mission, and we spent more than an hour poring over word clues, puzzles, and evidence to finally solve the crime.

At this point, it was midway through the afternoon, and we still had the rest of the museum to explore including space, progress, gadgets, life, oceans, energy explorers, and more.  Needless to say, we didn’t have enough time to visit every area.  We did stop by the life area, however, and had fun competing with each other in the various physical challenges (have I ever mentioned that we tend to be just a little bit competitive?!).  The exhibit pictured above tested your reaction time to see how many lights you could quench before the time ran out.  I may or may not have severely bruised my finger as I raced to outscore my second oldest son (but just for the record….I won!).

By the end of the day, we were all completely exhausted, but it was hands down, one of the best memories we created this summer!

COSI would like to offer one of my readers a family 4-pack of tickets to visit COSI!  Want to win?  You have 6 ways to enter this giveaway:

  1. Leave a comment on this post – which exhibit would you most like to visit at COSI?
  2. Follow Cincinnati Cents on Pinterest.  Leave a separate comment letting me know that you’ve done this.
  3. Follow the Cincinnati Cents Twitter page and retweet this giveaway.  Leave a separate comment letting me know that you’ve done this.

  6. Follow the COSI Twitter page and retweet this giveaway.  Leave a separate comment letting me know that you’ve done this.

Please make sure you leave a separate comment for each method of entry on this post.

This giveaway ends at 8:00 p.m. EST on Monday, October 26th, and is open to all U.S. residents, ages 18 years or older.  The winner will be selected randomly, and will be notified by e-mail.  The winner will have 48 hours to respond.  If no response is received by that time, a new winner will be chosen.

COSI: Family 4-Pack of Tickets Giveaway

by Katie on August 21, 2015
