Holiday Planning Update: Day 13

by Katie on November 20, 2014

I had very good intentions of making buckeyes this afternoon.  The only ingredient I was lacking was paraffin which I planned to pick up at the store.  However, I stopped at two different grocery stores and was unable to find it at either one.  Luckily my mom has paraffin left over from her holiday baking last year, and she’s kindly offered to share her stash.  So, the buckeyes will simply need to be bumped to another date and time.

Each year, our family comes together for some type of devotional throughout the Advent season.  For starters, we have an Advent wreath on our dining room table that we light at each meal to remind us of our progression throughout the Advent season.  We also have a set of Jesse Tree ornaments that we typically use in conjunction with an Advent devotional.  We’re planning to continue both of these traditions again this year.

It didn’t take long to clean out the dining room this afternoon.  With everything wiped down and organized, the room is ready for serving Thanksgiving dinner.  Now I just need to skim through Pinterest to find a few inexpensive fall decoration ideas to spruce up the table and the hutch.

I’m pleased to report that our boys’ room is finally cleaned out and organized.  Without a doubt, their room is the one that I least enjoy cleaning.  It’s not just because there’s three times the amount of belongings crammed into one room, but it’s also the fact that the mounds of “stuff” do not seem to bother them in the least.  In fact, when I suggested reorganizing the room, you might have though I was signing a petition to take a hammer and a chisel to Mount Rushmore….sigh!  But, at long last, the project is completed.

Last on the list for the day, we hauled the Christmas tree out of the storage room this afternoon.  As you might have guessed, we’ll be putting the tree up this weekend as it has become a “weekend before Thanksgiving” tradition.  Since it’s a pre-lit tree, I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that at least some of the tree still lights up!

Stay tuned tomorrow morning for Day 14 of the Holiday Planning series.  If you’ve missed previous posts from this series, you can catch up by reading them here.

My sunrise view on the way to taking my sons to school yesterday morning.
Don’t worry – my son snapped the shot while I was driving!

Even with my preparations well under way for Thanksgiving and Christmas, I must admit that it’s a little mind boggling that Thanksgiving is exactly one week from today.  I somehow feel like I misplaced a few weeks during fall!  Nevertheless, with a week’s deadline in mind, it gives me plenty of resolve to finish my pre-holiday to do list.

Here are my holiday planning goals for today:

  • make buckeyes
  • choose an Advent devotional for our family
  • clean out dining room
  • finally finish cleaning our boys’ room
  • get our Christmas tree out of the storage room

Later this evening, I’ll post an update on today’s goals.
