Give Freely: Week of 3/10/11

by Katie on March 11, 2011

Welcome to Give Freely!

One in five Americans deals daily with the issue of not having enough to eat. Many of those are children. As couponers, we have the unique opportunity to buy items at extremely reduced prices (or even free) to feed our families.

The goal is Give Freely is to present you each week with freebies or near freebies from your local grocery stores. Because these items are so inexpensive we are hoping that you will spend the extra few cents to pick up a spare item to donate to your community center, church, local food bank or shelter.

If you are a blogger who does deals for a supermarket not on this list and would be interested in participating, please send  an e-mail to a Frugal Chick!

Please take this opportunity to help stop hunger in this country!

Kroger and Meijer both have canned tuna 2/$1 this week. Kroger has frozen fish fillets (think it’s pollock but not 100 pct sure) Kroger brand at 10/$10 (normally $2.49 each). This is a wonderful idea, by the way. Since the downturn in the economy many more people need help and food banks are, quite frankly, overwhelmed. I donate a lot to our local food bank and here are some things they have told me:
1. Hungry children need good nutrition—so many people only donate junk stuff.
2. Hamburger helper is ok but many families can’t afford the hamburger to go with it.
3. Most people don’t think of donating things like laundry soap, toilet paper, etc. feminine supplies but the need for those is great also.
